* If you look at the Menus in ALL packages there's an underlined letter - if you click the Alt key and then the letter, the menu will appear (eg Alt F displays the File Menu).
* Once the Menu has dropped you can just click an underlined letter to launch the feature you want or you can use the arrow keys on the keyboard to move up and down the list - and the right and left arrow to drop down the extra items when there are "Sub menus" - more choices for a particular item.
* You'll notice that some items in the Menu have a special shortcut key (such as Ctrl S for Save and Ctrl C for copy). As long as you haven't already entered the Menu you can use these instead of the Alt key combination - it takes you straight to the tool you want rather than going via the Menu.

Making it easier to learn the Shortcuts

* In many programs - Word and Excel for example - you can ask to see the shortcut key with the Tool Tip - the little yellow box which tells you what the icon is.
* Go to the Tools Menu, Customize, Options and ask to see the Shortcut Keys with the Tool Tip.

Finding a list of Shortcut Keys

You can find lists of shortcut keys in the Help menu - if Contents and Index is offered, select that, click the Index tab and type shortcut keys - then double click the items of interest - its a bit of a nuisance because they tend to be on different sheets although some newer packages do combine them. In Office 2000 and 2002 you'll have to ask the Office Assistant to take you to the Help Screens.

The Help in the Start Menu is Windows Help - telling you how to make the best of your computer and the way you use Windows - and there are more shortcut keys to be found in the Index there.

If you've got the Flying window key on your keyboard - on the bottom row - it opens the Start Menu for you - if you haven't got that key you can use the Ctrl Esc keys.

Using Shortcut Keys in Dialog Boxes

* When a Dialog box is open (the Format Menu, Font Window, for example) you can move from item to item with the Tab Key (the key towards to the top left of the keyboard with arrows pointing in both directions).
* You can retrace your steps by using Shift (the upward pointing arrow on the left or right above the space bar) and Tab.
* Use arrow keys in the centre of the keyboard to move down to a list - the up arrow will take you up again. Move off with the Tab key when the item you want is selected.
* Move from page to page by using the Alt Key and the underlined letter.
* If you want to turn a "tick box" feature on or off, use the Space Bar to select/deselect.
* You don't need to click the OK button on the windows - as soon as you hit Enter the window closes and accepts any changes you have made (if you look you'll see it's slightly darker around the edge than the others showing that it is the button that will be selected)
